Direct Line Supplies Ltd, are based in the North-East and are one of the largest suppliers to the catering trade in that region. 

Direct Line approached FIlplastic as they needed more racking for their warehouse. Filplastic visited site and quoted for Pallet Racking with installation.  We also supplied a quantity of our C2DS wire warehouse baskets.

Safety Checks for Outdoor Pallet Racking

We are often asked about health and safety checks for pallet racking, and thought the information below regrading outdoor pallet racking may be of use.

Q. We are looking to install some static pallet racking outside. We have indoor racking which complies with the SEMA code of practice but are there any extra checks we need to carry out on outside racking and how do we comply with regards to rusting of the uprights/beams?
 

A. The inspection checks for external racking are similar to internal racking; however, the design of the racking and the protective coating can be significantly different.

The supplier should design the racking to ensure that it is acceptable for the additional wind loading and the racking should be installed by trained installers who are SEIRS (Storage Equipment Installers Registration Scheme) registered. The design often requires the use of different floor fixings to the standard fixings used on internal racking.

The normal painted finish provides very little corrosion protection for external racking which therefore rusts in quite a short period of time. The beams are generally not painted internally and can rust from the inside out. A competent ‘third party’ rack inspector, preferably a SARI (SEMA Approved Rack Inspector), will be able to give an opinion as to whether the racking will last for another year or whether it needs to be replaced. Racking with a galvanised finish is normal for external applications and will last longer outside. Any new rack purchased for an external environment should be designed to suit this environment with a galvanised finish.

Worrying Safety Issues with Machine Repaired Pallet Racking

• Do you have any pallet racking that needs repair?
• Have you had any uprights repaired recently?

If the answer is yes to any of the above, then please read the advice given below by  SDG/SEMA:

"SDG Chairman, Jonathan Bennett, has urged SDG members to join the SEMA campaign alerting customers about potential dangers in a particular type of rack repair.

The association has raised serious concerns over a method of rack repairs that straightens damaged uprights using a jig and a hydraulic ram without offloading pallets before undertaking the repair.

SEMA’s Technical Committee believes that this method of repairing adjustable pallet racking could be extremely dangerous and flies in the face of health and safety best practice enshrined in the HSE’s guideline on Warehousing and Storage, HSG 76.

The association states that any racking modified in this manner and its safety will not be underwritten by any SEMA rack manufacturer whose products are modified in this manner."

Bonmarche Case Study 2014 - Warehouse Baskets

Bonmarche, the ladies-wear retailer first contacted us in 2013 as they needed to re-arrange their warehouse to better store wrapped clothing. 
 

They evaluated a few different methods before deciding to use our warehouse baskets.  The wire baskets were ideal as the front lip stopped the wrapped clothing from slipping forward, and the dividers allowed different size compartments to be created within the baskets.

Magic Toyz Fancy Dress Case Study

Magic Toyz Ltd, (t/a Mega Fancy Dress) have been a valued customer since 2011. In that time we have supplied a mezzanine floor and wire storage baskets, and are working on another current mezzanine floor project.  

Magic Toyz have a busy internet fancy dress company and needed more space, and better organisation to help with order picking.

Marl International, Mezzanine Floor Case Study

Marl International approached Filplastic to quote for supplying a mezzanine floor to go over their new machinery. The plan being  that once installed, the office staff would relocate to the area above the machinery, so the space was not lost. Marl International is a leading supplier of LED products & systems.

Chris Wallbank from Filplastic visited site twice, and provided a drawing and quotation that was acceptable to Nathan Orton & Phil Elison of Marl. Filplastic were delighted to be given the contract above the competition.

The installation had to be carefully managed, as there was electrical work being undertaken for the new machinery at the same time as Filplastic was installing the floor. Everything progressed smoothly, with both parties working together to meet the required installation deadline.  Filplastic also designed & supplied double skin steel partitioning, which Marl installed themselves. They also installed their own LED lighting into the ceiling grid of the mezzanine floor.  The installation took place in September 2014. It's Not Too Late For The Xmas Rush

With Christmas just weeks away, now is the time to make those tweaks and adjustments to your retail shop. Don't underestimate the difference that good merchandising and planning can make on your average consumer spend.
